Combining direct real estate and REIT stocks equally in an institutional portfolio can increase the overall performance of a portfolio by an average of 27 basis points annually compared with portfolios that hold only one or the other, according to a soon-to-be-released analysis by Ibbotson Associates for the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts.
