I am haunted by an episode that took place two years ago. It was a bright sunny October morning and I was walking my son Thomas to nursery school.

Arriving at the school gates, I was confronted by a reporter from another paper preparing an article for International Walk To School Week.

'Oh yes,' I chirped earnestly. 'I intend to walk him to school every day. It's good for his health and cuts down on the traffic on the road.'
