For evidence of the widespread interest in the words of Damon Runyon, how about this headline in the Dec. 4, 1918, The Syracuse Herald?
"Damon Runyon Says Yankees Marched in Silence in German City of Treves."
No, Runyon didn't give a speech. That was a headline for a story he wrote about the American Army of Occupation in post-World War I Germany.
Not many journalists had enough drawing power to prompt an editor to pluck the name from the byline and slap it in the headline.
Runyon did.
