On New Year's Day, 1946, Canadian Army Captain Wady Lehmann had his last interview with condemned SS Brigadefuhrer (Major General) Kurt Meyer. Lehmann carried with him the news that Meyer's sentence had been confirmed and he would be executed by firing squad on 7 January. As he left, Lehmann turned and wished the condemned man a Happy New Year. Realizing his gaffe, he quickly apologized, but Meyer waved off Lehmann's comment. He had seen many fine men die, he told Lehmann, and was not about to start feeling sorry for himself.
