So what will "Julius Caesar" be this time? Mafia slasher epic? Fascism on the rise? Sub-Saharan warlords on a rampage? Or good old-fashioned togas, sandals, daggers and swords?

William Shakespeare's 1599 tragedy "Julius Caesar" is uniquely malleable. Its red-hot politics and white-hot violence are archetypal. They pretty much fit into any form of political anguish that an ambitious director thinks will make for an exciting show.
