The ability of an individual to learn a motor skill may be viewed as a product of the interaction between the individual and his environment in an attempt to reach a goal. The premise proposed by a critical article written by A.M. Gentile in 1972 forms the basis for this review article on the process of motor skill acquisition. Much of the research efforts on movement have concentrated on the function of muscles, muscle groups, and joints, which together form the basis of the science of kinesiology.
