After the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts' pro-British military Governor Thomas Gage wrote to Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull seeking assistance against the patriots. But Gates did not get the desired answer. Trumbull replied by accusing Gage of engaging in "a most unprovoked attack upon the lives and the property of his Majesty's subjects." He even wrote that the British troops occupying Boston would "disgrace even barbarians."
