ALTHOUGH IT IS THE PRESENT TENSE that predominates in Jacques Lovichi's Les derniers retranchements (chosen from some thirty years of production, 1965-1995), his poetry moves in a timeless realm of myth suggested by the long nominal chains and the frequent infinitives (he titles one poem "Infini[tifs]s presents") and by the many past and present participles doing dual duty as adjectives and verb forms cut off (retranchees) from temporal signification.
