WATERFORD, Pa. _ Laura Heeschen loves to tout French Creek.

The stream in northwest Pennsylvania is a beauty. It's a riffles-and-pool stream with exceptional water quality. It's home to nearly 90 species of fish, including 15 species of colorful darters and 27 species of freshwater mussels or clams.

That makes French Creek one of the most biodiverse streams in the country. It remains one of the most pristine streams in the Northeast _ with relatively few signs of civilization visible from the water.
