ON February 29, 1960 one of the worst disasters in Morocco's history took place when an earthquake struck Agadir claiming 15,000 lives.

With 80 per cent of its land and much of its cultural heritage buried, the city has had to fight hard to get back on its feet, wisely using its coastal location and 10km of sandy beach as selling points.

More than 40 years after the earthquake, 21st Century Agadir has become home to some of Morocco's most luxurious hotels as tourism sits alongside agriculture and fishing as its chief ...
