Magnetic chucks have been used to hold workpieces ever since Oakley S. Walker invented the device nearly a century ago, in 1896. The single-stroke surface grinder, introduced in 1904 by Mr. Walker, incorporated a magnetic chuck and his patented demagnetizing switch.
