The Virginia Symphony didn't know it had so many friends. Last fall, the symphony was teetering on the edge of insolvency and badly in need of a six-figure cash infusion. The Norfolk Foundation, the region's biggest patron of the arts, stepped in, but in a way that challenged the symphony to seek a vote of confidence from its supporters.
