Lombard is celebrating its 100th birthday as a village, and in 16 years, it'll mark its 150th birthday as a town.

That might not be the kind of math taught in local schools, but it says a lot about Lombard's history.

Carved out of an area known originally as Babcock's Grove that was first settled in the 1830s, Lombard was chartered as an official town in 1869.

But it wasn't until Aug. 25, 1903, that leaders of the town, named for Chicago banker and developer Josiah Lombard, "re- chartered" ...
