Freya Stark, daughter of a sculptor, was born in Paris, grew up in Italy and in Devonshire and was educated at Bedford College and the London School of Oriental Studies. Once she had mastered Arabic, she began to travel in the Middle East where she was to make numerous solitary journeys in Iran, Luristan and, as here, in the Hadhramaut, once the centre of the vastly profitable incense trade. We now know it as the Yemen and it is still far from being a regular travel destination.
