FOR MANY GARDENERS, asters in flower signal the end of the season - autumn upon us. Asters take us out of the growing season in style, with masses of flowers humming with busy bees that are taking advantage of a late nectar source.

However, there are some asters that begin blooming by midsummer, so choose carefully and you can have a four-month display of these cheerful flowers.
