U.S. interests in Indonesia have changed since the beginning of the global war on terrorism, given Indonesia's status within the Muslim world and especially after the Bali blast in October 2002, which marked the clear emergence of Islamist terror groups within Indonesia. During the Cold War, Indonesia had been an important partner in containing communism. Indonesia remains important today, as it sits aside critical sea lanes, and its fate will have a dramatic impact on the resilience of Southeast Asia as a whole.
