NEW YORK--After a surge in depilatory sales last year, when more women turned to the products to remove unwanted hair and a growing number of men started using depilatories for the first time, the category has taken a step backwards.

Information Resources Inc. reports that mass market sales of depilatories, excluding Wal-Mart Stores Inc., declined by 16.1% to $124.6 million in the 52 weeks ended June 15.

Drug store sales fell 21.2% to $83.9 million.
