Hennessy's book is as nuanced, personal, fascinating, fluid, evolving, and even convoluted as the premiership which he describes. Likewise, just as Hennessy sometimes faults prime ministers' neglect of the big picture by becoming distracted by extraneous matters, he himself wanders into fascinating diversions (Harold Wilson's suspicions of being spied upon, the military details of the 1956 Suez Canal operations, etc.). ...
