THE ISSUE
People who study whales and dolphins in Puget Sound say Navy sonar is spooking and even killing the marine mammals.
They point to an incident May 5 in Haro Strait in which orcas and Dall's porpoises seemed to panic when the Everett-based USS Shoup passed through with its sonar pulsing. Harbor porpoises washed up dead on beaches afterward.
The Navy says it is waiting for results of tests on the dead porpoises before deciding what happened....
