IN MARCH OF 1853 the German immigrant Henry E. Steinway began building pianos in a tiny workshop in lower Manhattan. One of his earliest pianos now occupies a place of honor at the Steinway & Sons factory in Long Island City, New York. Although the instrument, with its yellowed ivory keys and cracked veneer, shows the wear of 150 years, the Steinway trademark and reputation is as vibrant as ever.
