Today, most Americans hear about the western African nation of Liberia from news reports about its bloody, 14-year, civil war.

However Liberia's early history, as part of a region that once was collectively known as the Ivory Coast, has deep roots right here in Hampton Roads.

Our area's association with the Ivory Coast and Liberia harkens to a time when local plantation owners grew prosperous from slave labor shipped from that region of Africa by ruthless European traders. Taking advantage of continual civil wars, white shippers bartered for slaves ...
