This article discusses Y. B. Mangunwijaya's reflections on nationalism and its relation to the Catholic Church in Indonesia. His reflections are basically a movement to the past in order to criticize the present and to view the future. Having reflected on the original ideas of the founders of the Indonesian state, he argued that Sukarno's Guided Democracy and Suharto's New Order deviated from them.
