From peapods to laboratory medicine: molecular diagnostics of inheritable diseases. (Clinical Issues).

"She has your smile and my eyes," says one parent to the other. As pleasing as these facial characteristics are, their child may also inherit disease predisposition from one or both parents. This article reviews some of the common applications of molecular diagnostics today and looks at where they may be applied soon in the area of inheritable genetic diseases. Laboratorians must gain a more comprehensive understanding of molecular diagnostics as many of these tests begin to be performed and interpreted.
