When Proscar was first approved to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, the drug was thought to have cancer prevention possibilities. Last month, the online version of The New England Journal of Medicine published good news/bad news results from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial involving 18,000 healthy men, aged 55 years and older. All the participants were at low risk for developing prostate cancer; they had been randomly assigned to take daily doses of either Proscar or a placebo for seven years.
