STAFF from the props department of the Royal Shakespeare Company have made, from scratch, a Gatling gun for a production of Richard III.

Dean Asker, RSC spokesman, said: "This is no ordinary gun, but a re-creation of a big revolving battery gun, mounted on two wheels, developed by American inventor Richard Jordan Gatling in 1862.

"Historically it is seen as the world's first successful machine gun."

The RSC's Gatling gun took a fortnight to complete...
