Madness of a one-man show; The work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, showing at the Royal Academy, serves to illustrate that in this country a serious exhibition of German Expressionism is long overdue.

IN mounting an exhibition devoted to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the Royal Academy takes the considerable risk of low attendance and no profit, and it is interesting to note that business sponsors of the kind who compete to subsidise exhibitions of Monet's worst water-lily paintings have kept their cheque books closed.
"Kirchner?" said the chairman of this and that great firm, " Kirchner?
Never heard of him. I'll ask my wife."
And his wife, who having attended a lecture or two at the V&A and National Gallery thinks herself ...
