ROBERT Adam was Britain's first celebrity architect. Like Norman Foster and Richard Rogers now, Adam and his rival, Sir William Chambers, were the two hottest names in the reign of George III. They were the founders of neoclassicism, much sought after by the wealthy and fashionable.
But while Chambers's approach was rigidly academic, Adam was a dazzling innovator. With his younger brother, James, he originated the playful style of interior decoration - festoons, ribbons, delicate pilasters - for which he is best known today.
