The White House announced Tuesday that President Bush intends to nominate Sandra L. Townes, a longtime lawyer and judge in Syracuse courtrooms, to become a federal judge.

Townes, 58, would join the U.S. District Court in New York's Eastern District, which includes much of New York City and Long Island, with a population of 8 million.

The Downstate area has been Townes' judicial turf since Gov. George Pataki appointed her in 2001 to the Brooklyn-based state Supreme Court Appellate Division.
