Impressed by how speedy computers have become in the past decade? Prepare to be amazed. On average, computers became 30% faster every year in the 1980s; it is conceivable that their speeds could double every year in the 1990s. The people who are driving the new pace of innovation are the makers of computers designed according to the principles of "reduced instruction-set computing" (RISC). The leaders are two American companies, Sun Microsystems and MIPS. Both promise to put the processing power of today's biggest mainframe computers on desktops by the mid-1990s.
