In the history of the botanical garden one re-invents Eden. This conceit is imaginatively captured in song lyrics and titles of books on gardening. "We have to get back to the garden" is one such lyric that wonderfully describes the 1960s and its cultural re-creations.
Re-creating the self: a personal "makeover" is not so easily captured in our imagination. Too often we discover the same old self when we re-visit where we are today in contrast to our fabled past or expired future.
