PRIME Minister Tony Blair led an avalanche of tributes to Sir Denis Thatcher, who died in hospital yesterday aged 88.

Former Premier Margaret Thatcher, 77, his wife of 52 years, who described him as the "golden thread" running through her life, was at his side.

Friends fear Lady Thatcher, a shadow of her formidable former self after a series of minor strokes, will find it difficult to cope with the loss of her "mainstay".
