FDA panel vote may spell the death knell for syrup of ipecac.

The US Food and Drug Administration has been mulling the future of syrup of ipecac as an over-the-counter product since 1985, but a Non-prescription Drugs Advisory Committee debate on June 12 seemed to all but seal its fate. The advisory panel voted six to four to recommend that syrup of ipecac be switched to a prescription-only product.

And, going one step further, nine of the 10 voting panel members said there was not adequate evidence of the syrup's efficacy in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with poison ingestion.
