NEW YORK -- Perhaps no other segment of mass market retailing has undergone as much change over the past decade as the discount store channel.

The 50,000-square-foot discount store with its general merchandise mix of hard lines and soft lines that dominated the industry 10 years has all but vanished from the retail landscape. Along with it have gone most of the discount store channel's regional chains, including Caldor Corp. and Ames Department Stores Inc.
