Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. executives may well be reminding themselves of the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for.''

The firm just won control of the Lauren women's line, effective Jan. 1, 2004, after eight months of increasingly tense negotiations with licensee Jones Apparel Group. The trouble is, Polo got the brand sooner than it expected. That means the $2.4 billion company, best-known for menswear and licensing, has mere months to morph into a large-scale manufacturer of womenswear.
