Sharing the Wealth and the Worries

Larry McFadden, Fairfax Lumber's president and chairman of the board, says he didn't realize just what an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) could do until his lumberyard in Fairfax, Calif., caught on fire.

McFadden understood many of the benefits of ESOPs and knew things were going well for the 100 percent employee-owned company. But he never realized how seriously the employees took their ownership.
