Desde que el hombre es hombre, la guerra y la paz han sido el anverso y el reverso de una misma realidad: se hace paradójicamente la guerra para preservar la paz. Sin embargo, si la guerra tiene una sola connotación --destruir al enemigo que amenaza la paz--, esta última, como lo ha analizado Iván Illich, reviste características muy distintas que tienen que ver con el ethos de cada pueblo, es decir, con sus mitos, legislaciones, dioses, creencias. La paz es así tan vernácula como la palabra.
