Boston's Bay Village neighborhood, the earliest neighborhood built entirely on filled land, was developed by a housewright named Ephraim Marsh, a carpenter from Hingham who became a successful developer, builder and manufacturer as well as a city official who helped cleaned up Boston's notoriously filthy sewers and streets and planned the area around the original Faneuil Hall Markets.
Marsh, born in 1767, grew up in Hingham, where his father, also named Ephraim, eked out a living as a farmer and fisherman in a town where the family ...
