Putting a price on paintings of John D. Barrow might be as difficult as painting the light that glances off ripples in Skaneateles Lake.

Right after one of Barrow's 19th century oil paintings surfaced in a Syracuse garage sale, some people were tossing a $50,000 figure around.

That number keeps popping up, more than a month after the May 3 sale, and after it was discovered that a second Barrow painting had changed hands at the same sale. Both were among the 52 paintings Barrow donated to the Onondaga County ...
