TO MY MANY suggestions for refining baseball statistics - all ignored over the past 30 years - let me add this one.

It has become customary to publicize pitch counts, which used to be the private preserve of managers and pitching coaches. These are now included in some box scores, flashed on scoreboards in ballparks, and mentioned prominently in game stories and broadcasts.

They're broken down as strikes and balls. The balls are the pitches actually called balls by the umpire. Everything else is lumped together as ...
