Imagine a great city with a separate room for every infectious patient and every intensive-care patient at its largest public hospital.

That dream came closer to reality Thursday when Denver Health opened its Western Addition, with 52 new private beds.

The $142 million expansion is the first major addition since 1969, when there were only about half the patient visits as there are now.
