THE use of decorative tiles and plaques dates back to the 9th Century to the palaces of the Turks and Moors.
In Europe, and particularly in Holland, the use of wall tiles reached a peak in the late 17th and early 18th Century.
Dutch interiors of this period were covered in tiles, hand-painted in blue and white.
These tend to sell for less than pounds 50 each at auction but their polychrome cousins can make up to pounds 400 each.
