May 5--PACOIMA, Calif.--When Dr. William Chapman retired from his family practice two years ago, he saw a life of literature, travel and skiing -- a life without stethoscopes and prescription pads.

But Chapman is now one of a growing number of volunteer physicians and health care professionals to either step out of retirement or pledge free services to the San Fernando Valley poor.
