Private schools yesterday stood ready to lift a boycott of Bristol University called in protest at its alleged discrimination against their pupils.

The leaders of top fee-paying schools said they were pleased by the university's assurance it only wanted to select the best candidates and predicted applications from the independent sector would be as normal this year.
