Anyone who's heard of Kwanzaa, the annual cultural festival celebrated by blacks, knows a word in Swahili.

Every kid who's sung along with "Hakuna Matata" in Disney's animated film, "The Lion King" knows a little bit of Swahili, too.

And anyone who has visited east-central Africa, where 50 million people speak the language, has gotten a crash course in Swahili.

At UW-Madison, professors hope to make learning Swahili more like strolling through a village or marketplace in Congo or Uganda. ...
