Charles River Laboratories International Inc. has an advantage over other companies in the drug-development field - it gets paid whether or not the treatment makes it to market.

The Wilmington company provides preclinical safety-testing services to nearly every pharmaceutical and biotech company in the world.

"Our job is to help clients get to market," said James C. Foster, Charles River's chief executive. "Our services are necessary whether or not the drugs get to the market."
