Animal husbandry is one of industries in the country most prepared to meet competition in ASEAN under the regional free trade area scheme (AFTA) in 2003. However, the preparedness is only among large companies as small livestock farms are still facing a lot of problems. Improvement in export performance in the livestock sector contributes to stronger competitiveness of the animal husbandry sector. Meanwhile, imports have declined in the past few years with domestic requirement sufficiently met by local production.
