Coke Posts First-Quarter Profit; Sales Grow Modestly.

Apr. 17--HOUSTON -- Coca-Cola posted a first-quarter profit, but sales grew only modestly as the company dealt with worldwide troubles ranging from economic malaise to worries about the war in Iraq.

The results surprised some on Wall Street, leading to a rough day for Coke shares, which closed at $39.90, down $2.63.

Coke announced its results Wednesday as shareholders gathered for the annual meeting in Houston, home of Coke's Minute Maid unit.
