Taking the maritime industry by surprise, Norwegian Cruise Lines announced Monday that it has bought the storied superliner United States - the pride of Newport News Shipbuilding, America's biggest-ever passenger ship, and for the past three decades a rusting metaphor for the decline of the U.S. merchant fleet.
