Geopolitics, water and development in South Asia: cooperative development in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta.

The Geographical Journal | March 1, 2003| | Copyright

Introduction

The management of water resources has played a vital role in the economic development of many countries in the South, but in a global context where large dams and water control projects face growing critical scrutiny and political opposition, the development of water resources shared by more than one state poses particular problems. Such development is increasingly understood to have vital geopolitical ramifications, nowhere more so than in the Ganges- Brahmaputra-Meghna system of the Bengal delta, shared between India and Bangladesh.
