THE animosity between the two pupils had been simmering for weeks and when tensions reached boiling point, everyone - the feuding pair and classmates alike - agreed that the matter would have to be resolved in time-honoured fashion.

A venue for the eagerly anticipated fight was duly fixed: the lower school field, a popular spot for teenage scuffles because of its location well away from the teachers and with plenty of room to give free rein to the combatants.
